The problem

Timelines were built for cutting clips, not for finding stories.

Traditional editors treat video as a collection of files on a horizontal timeline. That works for assembling shots, but not for understanding hundreds of hours of footage. Dialogue hides in waveforms, ideas are scattered across clips, and your creative intent has no place in the project.

Overturn rotates the timeline by 90 degrees. You read your footage from top to bottom, like a document, and every line of dialogue, every scene and every idea becomes a note you can read, search, move and cut.

Traditional video editors are built for cutting clips, not for organizing massive amounts of dialogue. So I built a tool that is.

How it works

Planning, writing, footage review, story construction and editing happen in one place instead of across a stack of tools.

  1. Transcribe

    Turn footage into text.

    Overturn transcribes your recordings and describes what's on screen. Every spoken line and every scene becomes a note on the timeline, generated right on your computer if you like.

  2. Review & select

    Read instead of scrubbing.

    Skim conversations as text, search hours of material and leave comments as you go. Then drag the strongest moments into a new timeline. Raw footage, selects and story sit side by side, and every note stays linked to its footage.

  3. Shape

    Edit the story like a script.

    Rearrange notes and the footage follows. Delete a sentence and the shot it describes goes with it. Write scenes you haven't shot yet, and they wait as placeholders until you fill them.

  4. Compile

    Fill in the gaps.

    Fill placeholders with your own takes, stock footage or a pasted link. The built-in teleprompter shows your script while you record new material.

  5. Export

    Finish in the editor you already use.

    Overturn isn't here to replace DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro. It hands them a perfectly structured story: export via FCP7 XML, and your cuts and subtitles arrive in sync, ready for the final polish.

Your film starts as notes.

Notes describe your footage, carry your instructions and generate what's missing. Footage, effects and motion graphics serve your story instead of dictating the workflow.

Describe

Descriptive notes belong to the footage and move with it.

Auto Cull

Ask for the 50 best moments or every answer about the budget. Auto Cull selects and arranges what was said, and never rewrites it.

    Transcription and scene descriptions can run locally with downloadable models, so your footage doesn't have to leave your computer.

Who is Overturn for?

For directors, documentary filmmakers, YouTubers, podcasters and anyone who needs to find a story in a lot of footage: interviews, vlogs, events or long recordings.

Can I download Overturn yet?

Not yet. Overturn is in alpha and changing quickly. It will be available for download once it's ready.

Does Overturn replace DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro?

No. Overturn is where you find and shape the story. When the structure is ready, you export it as FCP7 XML and finish color, sound and effects in the editor you already use.

Does my footage leave my computer?

Your projects and media stay on your computer, and transcription and scene descriptions can run entirely on your device. Optional cloud AI features only send the content they need to process.

Which languages can Overturn transcribe?

Transcription detects the language automatically and supports more than 15 languages, including English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Polish.
